Have you seen www.uShare.co.uk. It’s a website that allows people to do exactly as you suggest - borrow or lend anything you want with people in your local community. It works on a points system so you don’t have to pay to borrow the item. uShare means there’s no need to buy something you may only need to use once. Simply borrow it, use it and return it. You could also save money and help the environment! Have a look www.ushare.co.uk

I agree wholeheartedly with what you have written and already live this way! I rarely buy anything new and always try to find new uses for stuff I no longer use. However, we are encouraged, in Australia, to spend, spend, spend, in order to boost the economy. This to me, is completely at odds with the principles of reduce, recycle and reuse, in order to conserve resources. I really cannot believe that overconsumption is the answer to global financial problems! It certainly won't help conservation!

Good round up of suggestions. I've considered going the buy nothing new for a year thing, but timing not quite right for me yet. At moment just trying to cut down and be mindful.
